Poetic and picturesque! The effects of drawing on learning poems

Ancient Chinese poetry was characterized by its rhyme scheme and highly visual nature. Xie and colleagues employed a within-subjects design to investigate the impact of drawing strategies on poetry learning. Sixty Tang poetic lines (e.g., 「犬吠水聲中,桃花帶露濃。」”The dogs’ barking is looming in the gurgling water; the peach blossoms are prosperous with crystal dew.”) were chosen as learned or tested items, with similar difficulty, familiarity, and concreteness. These items could be drawn, read, or written, and each participant learned the same number of items under each strategy.

Experiment 1 involved 59 college students recruited in China. In the learning phase, each participant was required to learn 30 poetic lines and each line was learnt by one of three learning conditions: (1) “draw” – draw a pictorial representation; (2) “read” – read aloud repeatedly; (3) “write” – transcribe verbatim. Learning performance was assessed through item recognition (distinguishing old from new items) and source memory (recalling the learning strategy) tests. Self-reported questionnaires assessed motivation for learning poems. Results showed that:

  • Drawing yielded the highest item recognition and source memory accuracy, followed by reading, then writing.
  • Students were more motivated to use drawing than reading or writing to learn.

Experiment 2, which involved 89 college students, compared drawing with an “explain” strategy, where participants paraphrased poems. A delayed test was included after one week. Results demonstrated that:

  • Initially, drawn items had lower recognition and source memory accuracy than explained ones.
  • However, in the delayed test, no accuracy differences were observed, indicating drawing’s superiority for retention.
  • Motivation remained higher for drawing compared to explaining.

The findings suggest that drawing is an effective strategy for learning poetry and the authors recommend that future research explore its effects on higher-order cognitive skills, as this study focused on foundational knowledge and skills.

Examining the impact of phonological-only instruction on reading

Phonological awareness (PA), the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken language, is closely associated with reading success, and educators often include PA-focused activities in their reading instruction. Due to ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of PA-only instruction without exposure to print or letters, a recent meta-analysis examined its impact on reading outcomes compared to print-based instruction.

The meta-analysis focused on studies involving participants from preschool through first grade in either randomized or quasi-experimental settings, examining the effects of different instructional methods on phonological awareness and reading outcomes. After applying inclusion criteria, 38 studies with a total of 3,880 participants (average age 5 years and 7 months) were analyzed, resulting in 293 calculated effect sizes. The results showed that PA-only instruction had a moderate overall effect on reading outcomes (g = +0.57). However, it was less effective than instruction that included print (g = -0.54), and less effective at improving word reading outcomes compared to PA skills alone (g = -0.33). The findings suggest that while PA-only instruction can be beneficial for reading, its effectiveness depends on two key factors: the type of reading outcomes and the comparison condition. Additionally, its effect on reading was more pronounced in kindergarten and first grade than in preschool. This meta-analysis did not find evidence that PA-only instruction is specifically necessary for at-risk readers compared to typical readers.

Raising up reading

Recognizing the reading gaps exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Scholastic RISE and RISE Up program was developed to support comprehension, word fluency, and writing development for grades 1-5 students through small-group instruction. In the Tier 2 program, students receive instruction focused on structured comprehension, word study, phonics instruction, and guided writing, typically 45-60 minutes each day.

The program was recently evaluated in a Florida school district using a mixed-methods quasi-experimental design. Nineteen schools volunteered to be a part of the treatment group, which included 168 students in grades 1-5. Researchers matched seven schools and 252 students to form a similar comparison group.

Overall, both RISE and comparison group students made similar progress on the Star Reading and FAST assessments (ES = +0.02). However, a sub-sample of students from both groups took the FastBridge exam every two weeks during the second half of the academic year. In this sub-sample, RISE and RISE Up students significantly outperformed the comparison group students on Words Read Correctly Per Minute (WRCPM) (ES = +0.40) and showed higher overall growth across measures (ES = +0.09) between January and May 2023. Researchers also noted that the final lesson number was a significant predictor of FAST end of year scores.

Assessing the quality of feedback from humans and ChatGPT on students’ writing

Automated writing evaluation (AWE) tools aid educators by quickly evaluating student writing, but often at the expense of accuracy and clarity, and setting them up requires substantial effort and resources. In contrast, generative AI like ChatGPT provides timely, targeted, and adaptive feedback that can enhance student writing. A recent study compared the quality of feedback from ChatGPT and human raters, with potential implications for process-based writing evaluation.

The study involved 200 students randomly sampled across grades 6-12 from two school districts in Southern California. Over two 50-minute class periods, students were tasked with responding to one of two writing prompts. Each prompt demanded that they read four primary and secondary sources and craft an argument analyzing historical interpretations using evidence, reasoning, and required writing skills. Sixteen experienced secondary educators from various disciplines were recruited and trained to provide formative feedback. This feedback was then compared to ChatGPT’s feedback, which was prompted to reflect the same context used by the educators. The researchers coded and analyzed the feedback for comparison.

The findings revealed that well-trained, paid, and relatively time-rich human raters offered higher quality feedback in four of five key areas: clarity of improvement directions, accuracy, prioritization of essential features, and use of a supportive tone (the fifth area: criteria-based feedback). However, ChatGPT’s writing feedback closely matched human feedback in quality, without requiring any training, and the differences in quality between ChatGPT and human feedback were modest, considering both overall quality and time savings. The researchers concluded that generative AI could be a useful tool in specific situations, especially for formative drafts or when highly trained educators are unavailable.

Are mathematics and writing skills related?

A substantial body of research has established links between reading and mathematics skills, as well as between reading and writing. Moreover, previous studies suggest that these skills share abilities such as executive function and higher-order cognition. It is therefore reasonable to hypothesize a connection between mathematics and writing skills.

A meta-analysis by Kim and colleagues investigated the correlation between mathematics and writing skills. The authors categorized both writing and mathematics skills into lower-order and higher-order subskills. In mathematics, skills involving information retrieval and understanding of magnitude (e.g., arithmetic, calculation fluency) are considered lower-order or foundational skills, whereas skills involving reasoning and comprehension (e.g., word-problem solving, data interpretation) are higher-order skills. In writing, transcription skills (spelling and handwriting/keyboarding) are lower-order, while written composition is a higher-order skill.

The meta-analysis included 211 studies with 564 effect sizes, primarily from English-speaking participants. Utilizing robust variance estimation, the results showed that the overall correlation between mathematics and writing skills was moderate (r = .48), with grade level significantly moderating this correlation. The effect was found strongest among lower primary students (K-Grade 2: r = 0.52), decreased through upper elementary (Grade 3-6: r=0.42), to college students and adults levels (r = 0.30).

Given the potential overlap between grade level and skill level, the analysis was further disaggregated by grade level. In primary grades, the lower-order writing and lower-order mathematics skills were moderately correlated (r=0.59), while the correlation between higher-order writing and higher-order mathematics was 0.48. Among university learners, the lower-order link was 0.36, and the higher-order link was 0.25.

The findings support a substantial link between mathematics and writing skills. However, the correlations decreased as grade level increased, and the higher-order link was comparatively weaker. The authors speculated a twofold explanation: a plateau of foundational skills and the possibility that different cognitive skills might be involved in higher-order tasks, warranting further exploration.

Relationship between statistical learning and working memory in children with and without dyslexia

Statistical learning (SL) is the ability to recognize and extract patterns from environmental data, such as language structures and sound co-occurrences, accordingly, SL is crucial for language acquisition and reading skills. Zhou and colleagues studied the relationship between working memory (WM) and SL in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and their typically developing (TD) peers. Data of this cross-sectional study were collected from 2014 to 2019, involving 651 Grade 1 to Grade 6 Chinese children from Hong Kong, among them 199 diagnosed with DD by a clinical or educational psychologist.

The study consisted of two experiments. First in the artificial orthography experiment, researchers used pseudocharacters with varying predictability levels (high, moderate, low) to assess the impact of working memory on distributional statistical learning. Participants studied 30 pseudocharacters in the learning phase. In the testing phase, they identified whether a pseudocharacter was previously shown in the learning phase.

The findings showed no significant overall difference in working memory’s association with SL between DD and TD children. Notably, the effect of WM on SL was weaker on recognizing moderate-predictable items compared to those of high-predictability or low-predictability. As age increased there was stronger positive effect of WM on recognition of familiar items (studied) in both groups. A negative association between WM and SL was found for unfamiliar items (non-studied), particularly among older children with DD.

Second, the visual triplet learning experiment involved a two-alternatives forced-choice task assessing conditional statistical learning through a sequence of visual triplets. After studying four triples of cartoons, children were required to identify the more familiar item between a familiar (studied) and an unfamiliar (not studied) triplet. Results indicated that children with DD showed a stronger effect of WM when recognizing sequences displayed as familiar-unfamiliar compared to unfamiliar-familiar items, while no such association was found in TD.

These findings highlight the complexity of the relationship between working memory and statistical learning, which varies according to the characteristics of the items and the specific type of statistical learning involved.
